This member of the Spuriae series forms clumps or tussocks up to 30cm in height. Leaves grassy, 2-5mm wide, usually overtopping the flowers. Blooms often solitary, 5-6cm wide, deep lustrous violet, the falls actually white, but heavily violet-veined, summer. South-eastern Europe to south-western Russia and Turkey, amongst scrub and grassland, sometimes in forest openings, at 900-1500m. I.s. subsp. brandzae (syn. I. brandzae) has narrower leaves and strongly inflated floral bracts. Romania.
