Botanical Description

spreading by stolons, about 45cm in height in bloom. sometimes much more. Leaves to 3cm wide, evergreen, in arching fans, rich green and lustrous in shade. Flowers on branching stems, 4-5cm across, white to pale lavender, the attractively frilled falls with a yellow-orange crest surrounded by a ring of purple spots; standards spreading to the same plane as the falls, early summer. China, Japan, in hillside forest. I.j. 'Ledgers Variety' is said to be hardier than other clones, but it can be damaged in severe winters.
