Botanical Description

This member of the Californicae series ranges from 15-25cm in height. Leaves evergreen, 2-4mm wide, usually deep, almost lustrous green with reddish-purple bases. Flowers one to two per stem, 6.5-7.5cm wide, in shades of purple, blue-purple or lilac-pink to orange, yellow and cream, the falls often with a darker vein pattern, late spring. Northern California and southern Oregon, on open to semi-shaded hillsides and in mixed evergreen forest. In the wild it hybridises with I. douglasiana and I. tenax. One of the best Californicae irises for northern temperate gardens. Many plants in cultivation are of hybrid stock. A good peatbed plant.
