1A. Approximately 15-30cm in height, the stems with long branches. Leaves 5-20mm wide, the outer ones somewhat sickle-shaped. Flowers 6-7cm in diameter, pale to dark purple or violet-blue, spring. Central and eastern Europe to the Caucasus. A variable species in the wild, especially in height and flower colour. Distinct in its section in being entirely leafless in winter. Susceptible to virus.
