About 15-30cm tall, forming small tufts of curved leaves. Flowers usually solitary (an exception to other members of ID.), to 9cm across, basically white or cream, boldly veined purple-brown, the falls with a purple patch and beard, and standards pale yellow with a greenish beard, late spring to early summer. E. Afghanistan, on rocky mountain slopes of granite or shale at 1500-3300m. Rare in cultivation. [Pl.225]
