The most distinct species in the whole genus, forming a flat rosette of 3-6cm long, obovate leaves with broad, flattened stalks. Flowerheads 2-2.5cm wide, sessile, in a central cluster, late summer. Pakistan to Kashmir, on open slopes at 2100-3600m. I.r. var. rhizocephaloides has flowerheads without ray florets.
