Botanical Description

Tufted to smah clump-forming perennial with slender, diffuse stems which ascend from decumbent rooting bases to 20cm or more. Leaves 8-15mm long, ovate to oblong-ovate, softly hairy. Flowers up to 1.5cm or more across, in clusters of two to seven, summer. Northern Aegean region, in stony, shady habitats. H. delphicum is similar but larger in all its parts, taller and more erect and with strigose-pubescent leaves and more numerous flowers per cluster. Aegean region (Andros, Evvoia), in woodland and rocky places. Seeds freely in a variety of situations; best cut back after flowering.

-108 \'A5 H. balearicum L. Evergreen shrub to 2m or more in the wild but usually not above 30cm in height in cultivation though in ideal conditions to more than twice this in time. Leaves up to 1cm long, ovate to oblong, leathery, undulate, the upper surface curiously warty-corrugated. Flowers 1.5-4cm in diameter, solitary at the stem tips, summer to autumn. Balearic Islands, in dry woods and rocky slopes.
