Botanical Description

Actinella acaulis, A. simplex, Tetraneuris acaulis). Tufted, from a branched caudex with a deep taproot. Leaves linear-oblanceolate, 2-5cm long, silky grey hairy. Flowering stems leafless, erect, 10-30cm tall. Flowerheads solitary, up to 5cm in diameter, the rays bright yellow, late spring to summer. Central Canada, south to Nevada and Texas, on high mountain slopes and ridges in the south of its range, mainly limestone. Variable in the wild in most of its characters; several subspecies are recognised. Var. caespitosa forms a tight silvery mat with sessile flowers; commonest in cultivation.
