Tufted perennial 8-20cm or more in height. Leaves 2-5cm long, spathulate, entire or toothed, slightly cupped and densely white felted. Flowerheads solitary, reddish or yellowish in bud opening bright yellow with a darker centre, up to 4cm or more across, summer to early autumn. California and Nevada, in open places and thin conifer forest, at 2000-3700m. H.v. var. pygmaea is more compact, the flowering stems rarely above 6cm tah; only above 2700m and up to 4000m in the San Bernardino mountains.
