Hedyotis purpurea). Perennial, tufted to small clump-forming, with erect stems 25-45cm in height. Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate, 2-5cm long. Flowers purple to lilac, 1cm long, in terminal clusters, early to mid summer. South-eastern U.S.A., on rocky slopes or in open woods on sandy soils. H.p. var. calycosa (syn. H. calycosa and H. lanceolata) has long lanceolate leaves to 1.2cm long and elongated calyx lobes. H.p. var. longifolia (syn. H. longifolia) has narrowly oblong leaves to 3cm in length and is native to north-eastern North America. H.p. var. tenuifolia (syn. H. tenuifolia and H. nuttalliana) bears linear leaves to 4cm long and flowers on very slender stalks.
