Botanical Description

An almost stemless to shortly stemmed, downy or glabrous perennial, rarely with sticky-glandular hairs. Stipules distinctive, triangular-acuminate, hairy, reddish, 2.5-3 by 0.5-1.5mm Leaves 5-50mm long with two to five pairs of primary leaflets, these densely, almost imbricately dissected into rather asymmetrical, ovate to elliptic leaflets 2-5 by l-2mm. Peduncles stiffly upright bearing up to fifteen or more flowers. Individual flowers 1-1.2cm across with a more or less downy dark calyx formed of 7-9mm long acute lobes, and rich yellowy-orange to flame petals 10 by 6-9mm Seed pods (legumes) 2-3cm long, strongly recurved to semi-circular. Argentina, the length of the Andes from Catamarca southwards out into the central Patagonian plain at 140-3200m, depending upon latitude.
