Hippocrepis
Family: Leguminosae

About 20 species of annuals and perennials from Europe, the Mediterranean region and western Asia.

They have alternate pinnate leaves and pea-shaped flowers, in stalked axillary umbels. The usually curved seed pod is a lomentum, breaking into one-seeded segments when ripe, not exploding as most legumes do.

Uses

Worth trying on the rock garden, though the larger species may, in time, take up too much room. Well drained, preferably alkaline soil and a sunny site are required. Propagation by seed or division in spring. Basal cuttings can also be tried in early summer.
