Height variable, ranging from 40-90cm Leaves rounded, deeply cordate, with five to nine shallow, toothed lobes, bristly hairy beneath, with or without similar but finer hairs above, mottled when young. Flowers with a green or red-tinted calyx and usually purplish petals, early summer. Variable in flower size and colour, leaf shape and hairiness. Eastern North America in woods and on shaded slopes where the soil is alkaline. Rather large for the rock garden and inferior in garden value to the similar H. sanguinea, with the exception of H.a. 'Palace Purple' having purple leaves and greenish-white flowers.
