Similar to H. californicus, but rosettes with fewer leaves which are narrowly oblong to oblanceolate, 2.5-5cm long. Flowers fewer, l-3cm across, flatter than those of H. californicus but otherwise similar. Washington State to Idaho, California, Nevada and Arizona, in the sagebrush, pine, fir and oak forest zones, but in open areas which are seasonally moist, then dry out; sometimes alkaline.
