About 55 species of cormous perennials from Africa south of the Sahara. They are allied to Ixia, having slender, sword-shaped leaves and loose spikes of fragrant, tubular-based flowers with six petal lobes.
Best in the alpine house, but can be grown outside where winter frosts are slight or non-existent. Well drained fertile soil and full sun are essential. Propagation by separating offset corms or cormlets when dormant in summer. Seed can be sown under glass in spring.
