About 20 species of annuals and perennials from Europe, Africa and India. They are mostly mat-forming with tiny simple leaves, stipules and minute five (sometimes four-petalled) insignificant flowers in axillary clusters.
The value of the species described here is entirely as pleasing green ground-cover for rock garden bulbs, especially those autumn crocus species that bloom before the leaves. Ordinary well drained soil and a sunny position are necessary. Propagation by division or seed in spring, cuttings in late summer.
