Like H. americana but somewhat taller (to 23cm), the leaf lobes usually longer than wide and pointed. Flowers to 2cm in diameter, lavender blue, sometimes white or pink, late winter to spring. Eastern North America west to Missouri, in woodland, usually on moister calcareous soils. Hybridises with H. americana in the wild and plants of such origin can be difficult to name. H.a. 'Plena' has double white flowers.
