Low hummock to mat-forming, to 30cm across or more but usually less. Leaves in crowded rosettes, oblong to lanceolate, 1-1.5cm long, silvery-silky-hairy. Flowerheads solitary, 2.5cm wide on stems usually about 5cm high but sometimes more, ovoid in bud with crimson-backed bracts which expand to show their white upper surfaces, summer. Natal and Basutoland at high (above 2800m) altitudes. Surprisingly hardy but ideally needs scree or raised bed conditions, with protection from winter rainfall.
