Tufted perennial with ascending, hoary-pubescent stems 40-60cm long from a branched, woody caudex. Leaves oblanceolate to lance-oblong or elliptic about 2.5cm or more long, densely pubescent beneath, often canescent above. Flowers about 2.5cm across, yellow in loose, often racemose corymbs of two to fifteen, summer. Later in the season petalless cleistogamous flowers are produced. Central to eastern North America in dry, rocky open woods, clearings and plains.
