Up to 40cm or more in height, distinct in the genus owing to its lack of large basal leaves. Stem leaves lanceolate, three-veined. Flowerheads 2.5-5cm. in diameter, yellow, facing upwards, summer. H.u. var. douglasii is more robust and taller, with flowerheads up to 6.5cm across. North-western North America, in mountain habitats.
