Mat to colony-forming, extending by slender branching rhizomes. Stems procumbent to decumbent, 10-30cm long. Leaves fairly crowded, elliptic-oblong to narrowly obovate, sessile, 4-14mm long, rich green and semi-glossy. Flowers petalless, in all the upper leaf axils, about 5mm across, with five pink, purple or white petal-like sepals, summer. Mainly coastal habitats, e.g. salt marsh turf, sand dunes and rock crevices, but also inland where soils are saline.
