from a robust, somewhat woody rootstock with few to several diffusely branched stems 30-60cm long, sprawling to erect, glandular hairy. Leaves usually wider than long, deeply cleft into five to seven lobes which are again lobed and toothed, 5-15cm across, aromatic glandular-pubescent. Flowers 2.5-4.4cm across, rose-purple to pink with darker veins. Summer. Western North America, in open forest and grassland, usually around 15001850m. Rather large and sprawling for the rock garden.
