Botanical Description

erect perennial 40-60cm tall with a thick rootstock bearing dense rosettes. Basal leaves shiny, linear or narrowly lanceolate-linear, fleshy-leathery, 10-14cm by 5-6mm Stem leaves few, lanceolate, shorter, in whorls of four to eight. Inflorescence a series of small, terminal and erect lateral cymes forming a graceful corymb with up to one hundred blooms. Flowers raspberry-red to brownish-red, 3.5-4cm long, suspended from slender 2-5cm long pedicels, the rounded, spreading to recurved lobes much shorter that the long, cylindrical tube, autumn in the wild. Northern central Peru, Ancash (Cordillera Blanca), in barish screes and among rocks at 4400-4500m. A very distinctive and beautiful species with a fountain of flowers, much prized as a picked flower for decorating crosses and other sacred objects. Related to G. punicea.
