Densely hummock-forming perennial 5-20cm tall from a stout woody rootstock. Leaves spathulate-linear, rounded at the tips, 1-1.3cm by 2-4mm, tapering to a pseudopetiole, glossy, deep green and leathery. Flowering stems ascending to erect, sparsely set with similar leaves and terminal, two to three-flowered cymes or solitary blooms from the upper leaf axils. Flowers puffed out but closed, orange-yellow 1.8-2cm long with lobes usually more or less broadly margined orange-scarlet and as long as the tube, autumn to late winter in the wild. Southern Ecuador; Azuay province in tussock paramo moorland, damp gravel flats, marshland and stony banks at 3600-4400m. Intolerant of hot summers in cultivation.
