Small mat-forming, 5-15cm tall in bloom. Leaves broadly obovate to spathulate, 1cm or more long, yellow-green. Flowers 2-3cm long, the broad spreading lobes deep blue, the tube paler, solitary, late summer. G.b. var. subacaulis is dwarfer with almost stemless flowers and broader, imbricate leaves. European Alps, in damp to wet grassland and bogs at 1300-3600m. (Var. subacaulis above 2400m). [Pl.193]
