Botanical Description

from underground stolons, wide spreading in time with erect stems to 12cm high. Leaves mainly towards the tips of the stems, elliptic, 2-4cm long and 1-2.5cm wide, bronze-green when young becoming glossy dark green and leathery, shallowly bristle-toothed. Flowers urn-shaped, white tinged pink with reddish-green calyces 6mm long from the upper leaf axils, summer. Fruits globose, scarlet, 8mm in diameter. G.p. var. macrocarpum is a form with fruits 1cm or more across. North-eastern North America in woodland. Very hardy and an attractive ground cover, but can be invasive on the rock garden.
