Botanical Description

suckering shrub to about 1m tall. Leaves elliptic to elliptic-oblong, 2-4cm long, mid to deep green and net-veined above, paler beneath, leathery. Flowers urn-shaped, nodding, pearly-white, in terminal and axillary racemes, early summer. Fruits globose to oblate, fleshy, about 6mm across, surrounded by an enlarged fleshy calyx, the whole deep purple-red. A hybrid between Gaultheria shallon and Fernettya mucronata which arose spontaneously at the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden at Wisley. It is sometimes listed as X Gaulnettya wisleyensis, but this name has never been validated. Seedlings from 'Wisley Pearl' have produced 'Ruby', with ruby-red fruits, and Glenroy Maureen, a dwarf selection about 15-30cm tall with broader leaves. X G. 'Pink Pixie' is derived from G. shallon crossed with 'Wisley Pearl' and shows more G. shallon characters especially in its broad leaves and pink flushed flowers.
