Botanical Description

Leaves deep green, glaucous, sometimes with a silver channel, explicative, occasionally undulate, 4.5-21 by up to 2cm Outer tepals 1.4-2.8cm by 4-15mm, inner tepals with apical green markings, not flared, 7-11 by 4-10mm Eastern Romania, Crimea, north-western Turkey in grassland or margins of conifer and broad-leaved woodlands. 'Warham', found in a garden at Warham, Norfolk but originating from the Crimea, received an FCC in 1937 but was imperfectly described. Paintings done at the time confirm the following description. Foliage broad with a silver channel, undulate. Outer tepal bases broadly wedge-shaped, transversely hemispherical. Inner tepals clasping with a broad, inverted U-shape mark, flared. It is a very good form of G. plicatus with its broad leaves and large flowers, but often incorrectly named in cultivation. 'Wendy's Gold' was found at Wandlebury Ring in 1985 by Mrs Sharman. Ovary and inner segment markings are yellow. E.A. Bowles in 1917 referred to a yellow form of G. plicatus growing for many years in the Cambridge Botanic Gardens. There is every reason to suppose that this was the first mention of a yellow G. plicatus and possibly just the same origin as 'Wendy's Gold'.
