Botanical Description

Bulb to 3cm across. Stem 20-50cm tall. Leaves six to twelve, opposite or in whorls of three, linear, the uppermost with a coiled tip. Flowers one to five in an elongated raceme, blackish outside, yellowish-green inside with small tessellations; scent spermatic. Tepals about 2.5cm long, with a linear nectary 1-1.4cm long, about 4mm above the base. Style trifid, papillose, the branches 2mm long. Capsule winged. In the Ukraine and southern Russia, usually growing in willow scrub and oak forest by rivers, flowering in April and May.
