Botanical Description

Bulb to 2.5cm across, sometimes with bulbils or stolons. Stem 16-40cm high. Leaves eight to twenty linear, the lowest usually opposite, the upper in a group of three, the rest often whorled. Flowers one to three, green, heavily and finely tessellated blackish-purple or brown, with a spermatic scent. Tepals 1.8-3.2cm, with a linear nectary from the angle of the bell to near the apex. Style 8-10mm, papillose, trifid for 2-7mm Capsule not winged. France to Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece, in peaty soil on limestone pavement and on rocky slopes, at up to 1600m.
