Bulb to 2.5cm across, often with bulbils. Stem 4-35cm tall. Leaves usually six or seven, all alternate, lanceolate, shining green. Flower solitary, very broadly campanulate, dark purplish, tessellated especially on the inside, with little scent. Tepals 3.5-5cm long, obtuse or rounded, incurved at the apex, with a narrowly ovate nectary at the angle of the bell. Style 1-1.5cm, smooth, trifid, the branches 2-5mm Capsule not winged. Caucasus and northeastern Turkey westwards to Erzincan, in alpine meadows and stony soil at 2000-3000m. F. lagodechiana, from the Lagodechi valley in the southern Caucasus, has large greenish flowers, and the uppermost leaves in a whorl of three. F. nobilis, described from Turkey, is a small, short stemmed form.
