Botanical Description

Bulb about 1cm across. Stem 6- 12cm high. Leaves lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, to 6cm long, the lowest opposite, the upper in a whorl of three. Flower solitary, broadly campanulate, whitish with brownish markings, not scented. Tepals 1.5-2cm long, with linear, yellowish nectaries about 5-8mm long, from the angle of the bell towards the apex. Style trifid for 2mm Capsule not winged, tapering from apex to base, nodding at maturity, with pear-shaped seeds. Japan, Honshu and Shikoku, at about 500m, in peaty woodland soil, wet in summer. F.j. var. koidzumiana differs in having fimbriate margins to the petals and nectary. In similar habitats on Honshu only.
