ex Benth. Very erect, dense, subshrub much branched from the base, 12-30cm in height with simple, downy stems. Leaves trifid with long acuminate lobes and reflexed margins, glabrous. Bracts similar but broader. Flowers few, in spikes, compact at first, elongating in seed, to 2cm across, white with yellow in the throat, which can spread down the lower lip to a greater or lesser extent. Entirely yellow variants have been recorded. Chile, from the southern cordilleras in volcanic sand or ash fields amongst bunchgrass or dwarf shrubs at 16002400m. The commonest shrubby Andean species.
