ex Boiss. Hummock-forming subshrub 15-30cm high and much wider, the old stems spiny, the spines being modified from the hardened pseudumbel rays. Leaves about 1cm long, elliptic to ovate. Raylet leaves chrome-yellow. Greece and Turkey on dry rocky limestone slopes and in open pinewoods on serpentine. Not fully hardy, but an intriguing alpine house subject.
