D C (syn. E. fonckii, E. glaberrima). Dense, spreading habit 30-60cm in height and two to three times this in width. Leaves obovate to spathulate, l-3cm long, finely toothed, glossy mid to deep green, glabrous (or downy in the plant originally known as E. fonckii). Flowers light red, 9-12mm long in racemes of up to twelve. Southern Chile and Argentina, in the Andes and the Magellan region, in open rocky places. Hardy in all but the severest winters but can lose some or all of its leaves after severe frost.
