Botanical Description

from a taproot, with slender stems 10-15cm tall. Basal leaves spathulate or lanceolate 4-7cm long, bristly white-hairy. Flowerheads solitary or in twos and threes, 2-3.2cm across, the rays purple to lavender-pink. Northwestern U.S.A. in cliffs and stony places and amongst sagebrush and open pine forest at 2600-3700m (upper levels in alpine fellfields).
