Tufted from a stout taproot, semi-woody at the base, about 30-50cm in height. Leaves linear to narrowly oblong, 2-6cm in length, hairy, often with pustulate hairs. Flowerheads in clusters, 1.5-3cm across, the rays blue or purple.
E.f var. confinis is a dwarf form usually less than 25cm California, mountains and foothills on grassy and scrubby slopes. (E.f. var. confinis on rocky ridges above 1000m.)
