Tufted to clump-forming, up to 15cm tall. Leaves linear to linear-oblanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, 3-8cm long, more or less pubescent especially the margins. Flowerheads solitary, to 1.5cm across, the ray florets white to pale pink, greyish-lavender and purple-violet, mid to late summer. Chile and Argentina, from the central cordilleras to Patagonia, in alpine herbfield at 2000-3000m, and steppe (800-1200m). Very variable, seeming to grade into closely allied species; see: EE. incentus, patagonicus, leptopetalus and schnackii.
