the tips of the woody-based decumbent stems barely 10cm in height. Leaves ovate, toothed, glaucous, 6-12mm in length. Flowers 2-4cm in diameter, rose-purple, in terminal clusters of one to three. California and Oregon to Nevada and Idaho, in subalpine and alpine meadows, rock ledges and screes. Useful late summer flowering plant for the alpine house. E.o. var. laxum is somewhat larger and looser, with bigger leaves, from lower altitudes.
