Tufted to mat-forming, glaucous, the stems decumbent up to 30cm in length. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, entire or finely toothed, 2-5cm long. Flowers to 1.6cm in diameter, light pink to deep rose-purple, in small terminal clusters. North-western North America, usually montane, in moist to wet places. E.g. var. fastigiatum is somewhat smaller, with leaves to 3cm long which are crowded and overlapping. E.g. 'Sulphureum', has pale yellow flowers.
