Botanical Description

A variable species depending on provenance, ranging from prostrate to a 3-4m small tree. The branches tend to be slightly pendulous with leaves to 1cm long. Female flowers in pairs or solitary. Fruits fleshy, 5-8mm long. Ecuador to Patagonia, following the Andes. Most satisfactory in cultivation is E.a. var. andina which is low-growing with green young shoots turning grey with age and filled with red-brown pith. Leaves on young shoots are 5-9mm long. Female flowers solitary, the fruits 1.5cm long, red, pink or white. Found at higher elevations. E.a. var. andina forma nana is flatly mat-forming, but see also E. frustillata.
