Wahlenbergia serpyllifolius). Height 2-5cm, stems prostrate or ascending, unbranched and sparsely leafy. Leaves 7-30mm long, spathulate, glabrous but ciliate. The bracts are shorter than the flowers. Flowers solitary, 1.5-2.5cm long, dark violet. Western Yugoslavia and northern Albania. This is one of the most beautiful species with its brilliant dark violet flowers. A superior form of it, var. major, with much larger flowers, has been available in the past, but is now very rare having apparently lost its vigour as has a less distinguished white form.
