Botanical Description

Roots bearing rice-grain bulblets. Flowering stems sturdy, to 45cm high or more. Leaves ovate to spathulate, up to 15cm long, somewhat fleshy-textured, more or less toothed and deep green, arching to horizontal. Flowers 1-2.3cm long, five-petalled, magenta to lavender or white, the tube yellow and stamen cones maroon and yellow, in umbels of five to seventeen, spring to summer. Vancouver Island to California, in woodland to open slopes, and sea level to 1250m or more. D.h. subsp. parvifolium is smaller in all its parts, with fewer flowers per umbel. Subsp. cruciatum has four-petalled flowers; California only.
