Rhizomes thick, with a dense covering of narrow chaffy brown scales. Leaves
triangular-ovate in outline, 25-40cm or more in length, quadripinnate-pinnatifid. Macronesia, southern Spain and North Africa, on trees and rocks. Half-hardy, needing just frost-free conditions. Sheds its leaves in early summer, often attractively yellow before falling, and grows again one to two months later.
