Prostrate to hummock-forming or erect habit, freely branching from a thickened trunk. Stems brown, rather brittle. Leaves oblong-obovate, mucronate, 8-11mm in length, bluish-green, fairly densely and evenly borne along the stem. Flowers white or cream usually flushed reddish-purple without, 1-1.2cm long by 6-8mm across, in pairs, or more rarely threes, at the stem tips, late spring. Fruits said to be fleshy and red. Greece and Libya, on limestone cliffs from sea level to 1000m. Unreliably hardy and best in the alpine house in deep containers, but not difficult. Hybrids with D. petraea, notably D. 'Kilmeston', have been artificially created.
