ex Verm.) Soo (syn. Orchis maderensis). Mature plant 40-60cm or more in height. Leaves eight to fourteen, usually lanceolate to ovate. Raceme up to 13cm long. Flowers bright rose-purple, to 2.5cm in diameter, the labellum wider than long, shallowly three-lobed, spur narrowly conical. Madeira, in moist woods and grassland at 750-900m. Darker and paler-hued and white-flowered forms occur in the wild.
