Leaves two to each shoot, sessile at ground level, oblong to obovate or elliptic, downy. Flower solitary, on slender peduncles 20-35cm in height, the lip obovoid, pendent, 4-7cm long, pink with darker veins, sometimes white, petals yellow to olive-green. North America east of a line from Alberta to Georgia in dry to wet woods and bogs. Distinct from most species in having only basal leaves.
