ex Benth. The most common species in gardens and probably the most vigorous. Leaves 6-10mm long, slightly hairy, deeply toothed or pinnately lobed. Flowers 2-4cm wide, with broader lobes than many species, making a well-flowered plant extremely showy. Variable in colour and size of flower, good white, pale and deep blue and purple forms being in gardens. 'Sherriff's Variety' has extra large pale lavender blue flowers and the var. insignis has flowers to 5cm wide. Himalaya from the Punjab and Nepal to Tibet and Yunnan.
