Botanical Description

Corm tunic membranous W\ parallel fibres. Leaves five to ten, 1-2.5mm wide, occurring with the flowers. Flowers 8-10cm tall, lilac-blue with a yellow throat and prominent, much-branched orange styles, autumn. The flowers have the interesting characteristic of remaining open in dull light. Southern Greece and many Greek islands, rocky places or scrub up to 600m. Cultivation is easy even in the open garden in well drained sunny sites. However, the open flowers are liable to rain damage and frame or alpine house treatment is preferable for this fine species.
