Corm tunic reticulate. Leaves three to four produced shortly after flowers have finished. Flowers orange yellow, variable in size, usually 4-7cm tall or more, spring. Western Turkey, in damp pastures at 1300-2000m. The usual subsp. herbertii is easy to grow in a well drained but moisture retentive situation and will spread by stolons. Subsp. gargaricus does not produce stolons and horticultural experience with it is limited.
